The Brief

West Preston Methodist Church is an amalgamation of three Methodist Churches in Preston. These churches have joined together to form one church worshiping on three sites. As part of the congregation there I was approached and asked to design a new identity for this new church.

Deliverables

• Logo concept and design (to include multiple uses for the logo across email, print and web)

• Ongoing website build at www.wpmc.co.uk

• Design printed material such as business cards and letterheads, event posters, leaflets and building signage.

• Digital designs for powerpoint slides, logo use within email footers, brand use on YouTube channel and website

Working directly with the Minister of the Church, I took a brief and talked over initial ideas. Whilst taking about these initial ideas, one thing became abundantly clear, the concept of 3 in 1. This is key to understanding where the church has come from and where they want to go. The concept not only reflects the three churches coming together, but also the very heart of Christian belief. The Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is the central correlation between these ideas.

After talking with the Minister and presenting initial logo sketches, I went on to develop a logo system that is based on the concept of 3 as 1. The logo needed to show these churches coming together to form one whole, around the central focus of our worship, Jesus Christ, symbolised by the cross.

The logo also needed to be simple, easily recognisable and versatile in its usage. In response to this, the logo that can be used in a primary horizontal layout, but also in a secondary stacked layout. Further to this the logo also needed to represent the three 3 locations and communities they are in. Therefore adapting the logo to include the Church names for signage became essential.

A pattern was also developed to reinforce the Church’s welcoming attitudes and mission. Circles show that we are all welcome without bias or discrimination and the colours, taken from the brand, are warm and inviting.

Testimonial – Reverend Ray Borg

The project for which Chris was commissioned went like a dream. He listened carefully to our description of what was needed and the back-story to the design brief. He asked relevant questions and stretched our imagination of what was possible beyond the obvious. The resulting corporate image fits the organisation down to a tee. We have something which projects who we are and what we stand for. We are immediately recognisable to people at large and to key agencies with whom we need to connect. The motifs work in all colours and for all types of media. We are extremely happy with the results and are proud to display our corporate image in all its guises.
