The Brief
I was put in contact with DCM Surfaces who wanted to redesign their logo. Initially we talked over what DCM meant as a name, what they thought was not working and what they aimed to get out of the redesign. We discussed other brands within their sector and what they liked or disliked about them to gain a reference of where they wanted to go. The brief became very open to new directions and so I had produced several logo concepts and sent documents to DCM for review.
Deliverables
• New logo concept that was punchy, identifiable and creative
• Logo to be taken across their fleet of transport vehicles as well as web, signage and printed material
• I also added apparel to this list as well to show workwear
DCM Surfaces are an outdoor surfacing solutions provider. They work in all aspects of this sector, from playground and footpaths, to commercial environments and private housing needs. Their work is broad ranging in this respect and comprises the use of varying materials based on the needs of the project.
Several options were put forward as logo ideas, but after reviewing them with the client, we decided these were not in keeping with their ideas and so developed a new style to be more punchy.
Final pitch
The latest file pitched to DCM for their logo is a very bold and playful design. This concept has been centred around pathways. The negative space forming the letters ‘dcm’ is hinting at a surface, allowing your eye to flow through the logo. The open ends of the ‘d’ and ‘m’ characters allow your eyes to enter into and exit from the logo. The logo icon is on a tilted on a 45° angle and coupled with the coral colour, produces a creative, interesting and eye catching graphic style.
A strapline has also been added and is a playful expression with two meanings.
We’ve got it covered
The first is to show you can trust DCM Surfaces’ expertise and confidence in delivering surfacing solutions – as if to say “don’t worry, we are the experts”. The second as a playful reference to the act of installing surfaces.
